Painted Tombstone Army Hat Plate, ca 1800-1820. Worn on the front of tall militia leather shakos and felt hats. The most dramatic, impressive and artistic historic hat insignia worn by the military in its entire history; 8.75" high, 7" wide; sheet tin, curved to fit the hat front; bright gold eagle under edge of cloud and sunburst; eagle sits on half globe; gold border and black background. Reverse has plume holder and 4 metal loop fasteners. Unit information scratched in back "Isaai R. Spooner/3 Company of Infantry/and first Regt. US 1st Brigd/Newport R. Island". Extremely rare.
