Painted Tombstone Army Hat Plate, ca 1800-1820; worn by militia infantry on the front of tall shakos. What makes this plate even more desirable than most is its upper contour, made to simulate the "Liberty Cap." 8.5" high, 6.5" wide; sheet tin, painted black with gold border; central motif is spread eagle/shield in gold under the word LIBERTY, and over 61st Regt. Holes around the edge for sewing plate to hat. Reverse has plume holder. Discovered in Rowley, Iowa and said to be ancestor of Donald Jaynes.
Paint is 95% intact, just aged to a matte texture, with shallow surface cracking in gold, which is also toning from age, VG-.
