U.S. Marine Corps Cap or Shoulder Belt Plate, C.1815-25 [Campbell & Howell, figure 30]; so rare that the National Museum has no complete specimens, only die samples. This oval plate is stamped sheet brass with spread-winged eagle atop U.S. shield with crossed flag, anchor and other military items; border is clearly die-cut, not hand cut, like reproductions; reverse has four soldered wire fasteners. In a collection over 20 years. A beautiful plate that appears original but cannot be guaranteed so.
