German-American Militia Officer's Silver Breast Plate, oval engraved and die-stamped coin silver; a rare example of insignia from militia unit made up of German immigrants; with beautifully cast and applied spread winged eagle atop olive branch; below eagle engraved U.D.U./Verein/Erie Pa./1842; These units were common during the Mexican War and Civil War; 2 original hooks on back; 4.65" high x 2.9" wide.
Minor tarnish on front with a bit more on the reverse, VG+.
