Quarter Plate Tintype of Civil War Sailor, anonymous studio portrait. An uncommon view of an enlisted salt wearing the regulation plain jumper and tie scarf tinted dark blue in the photograph. No evidence of rating or specialty patches and no cap tally that would identify his ship. The tar appears to have suffered some abrasive injury to his forehead that cannot be otherwise explained as a flaw on the plate. Relative to the number that served, images of Civil War seamen are seldom encountered, particularly in quarter plate format.
The heavily varnished tintype is undamaged but lacks the sharp clarity that would qualify it as superb. Two minor mat abrasions at left border. Housed in complete composition case with repaired hinge. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
