Outdoor Quarter Plate Tintype of Soldiers Playing Cards, a remarkable tinted camp scene that captured a bevy of unknown private soldiers engaged in a leisurely card game well away from the prying eye of the sergeant. Four players form a semi-circle on the ground and display their hand for the camera with personal weapons, pistols and muskets, held in close proximity, a pile of discards in the middle. A group of curious bystanders, including a horseman holding a pistol, gravitate toward the quartet adding dimension to this complex yet surprisingly candid composition. No indication of who the soldiers are or the story they tell.
The flawless plate is in EXC condition revealing superb detail in the foreground with delicate green tinting. Subjects in the background washed out due to camera's depth of field. Housed in worn black Union case with center floral urn motif.
