Life Trial and Execution of W. Palmer for the Murder of Mr. J.P. Cook, letterpress broadside in four columns with woodcut border and large woodcut of the condemned man on the scaffold, printed on thin paper, light uniform browning, several short tears at edges, small surface loss in left border, 480 x 370mm., John Powell, Printer, Stafford, and Whitechapel, London, dated in manuscript Saturday 14th June 1856. The greatest villain that ever stood in the Old Bailey (Charles Dickens). Dr William Palmer, known as The Rugeley Poisoner or The Prince of Poisoners, was tried at the Old Bailey and convicted of poisoning his friend John Cook in November 1855. Some thirty thousand spectators watched him hang at Stafford Gaol at 8am on 14 June 1856. The report of his execution is here datelined Stafford, 15 minutes past 8. Received by Electric Telegraph.
