Description
to which are added, Fragments of Burton, cut-down and scored-through autograph inscription "with the author's repects" tipped in at front, seemingly in the author's hand and possibly taken from the original front fly-leaf or wrapper, handsomely bound in later full green morocco, gilt, by Bedford, some minor scuffs, t.e.g., later cloth chemise and slip-case, 8vo, T. Plummer , 1802. Lamb's first dalliance with prose drama; against the advice of his friends Coleridge & Southey he submitted John Woodvil to the Drury Lane Theatre for potential performance but despite an interview with the then theatre manager John Kemble the play was deemed unsuitable. Such a lack of appreciation was not enough to convince Lamb that the work was however without some merit, and he had the worked published in the present form a couple of years later in 1802. The work also includes Mary Lamb's poem Helen , marking her first appearance in print; Lamb wrote to Coleridge about this poem, "How do you like this little epigram? It is not my writing, nor had I any finger in it. If you concur with me in thinking it very elegant and very original, I shall be tempted to name the author to you." The "curious fragments" ascribed to Burton are in fact also by Lamb.
