Description
Camping not Blowing, manuscript notice, 4pp., in pencil, on headed paper: "Discovery Antarctic Expedition 1901", folds, browned, 8vo, [c. 1902]. Instructions for camping in the Antarctic. "Fix tent poles (3 to wind) as required 2 men throw front part of tent over, 1 go inside & arrange, 1 pile snow on snow-cloth in blocks 1 man remove provision bag from sledge & take out what is required & refasten bag. 1 man remove & fill boiler & circular space with hard snow. Place Primus on something solid. Light up (taking care flame does not catch tent) all hands remove & change foot gear. 2 men feed dogs. All hands in tent for grub. If a man gets up during the night, should close up tent behind him, & step out carefully. Dress well at start. Keep pace when dragging. If blowing at mid-day halt, erect tent roughly or throw over sledge to make a lee. Lift sledge & remove snow from runners before starting & give it a shove forward on to firm ground. Let no damp get to sugar or soup powder."
