(Albert Borlase, second in command to Captain Scott & navigator on the National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04, 1864-1943) Autograph sledging note signed to Charles Royds: Sledging orders No. VII, 1p., sm. 4to, SS "Discovery", Winter Quarters, S Victoria Land, 2nd November 1902, "You will proceed tomorrow 3rd inst, to C[ape] Crozier, as arranged by Capt. Scott, to investigate the Emperor Penguin Rookery With you will be 'Plumley' - Stoker, and 'Blissett', Pte. R.M.L.I. you will also take with you 'Allen' and 'Macfarlane' Quartermasters, for one and a half days, together with Dell A.B. the three last mentioned men are to return directto the ship on leaving you. You will take provisions for fifteen days (15) for three men, and four days food for the three men who return after 36 hours absence from the ship. Wishing you all success Albert B. Armitage C/o", folds, slightly browned. Royds' second journey to the Emperor Penguin colony at Cape Crozier and the sledging trip on which the first Emperor penguin egg was discovered.. Armitage was described by Sir Clements Markham as possessing "one of the soundest judgements I ever met with". He was selected as second in command and navigator of the National Antarctic Expedition along with Dr. Reginald Koettlitz (1860-1914), after having served on the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Franz-Josef land in 1894-97. During the expedition Armitage was the first to explore the ice caps and the polar plateau of South Victoria Land.
