(Albert Borlase, second in command to Captain Scott & navigator on the National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04, 1864-1943) Autograph sledging note to Charles Royds, 2pp., in pencil, 203 x 122mm., [foot of the Western Mountains], 9th & 10th December 1902, on Armitage's exploration oif the Western Mountains, "My dear Royds, we are at the foot of the Western Mts at an altitude of 4000 feet I ascend them tomorrow with my Party, possibly to a height of 7 or 8000 feet. If there is a steep descent the other side, I may have to return by the Bluff. I should much like a weeks provisions deposited there for me, if possible. 'Kettles' might go part of the way with ºrne' & help him to do this. We have had heavy pulling, grand weather & magnificent scenery. If the relief ship turns up before we do & you can communicate with her, please send her to the Eskers to pick us up. If we do not put in an appearance by the 28th of January, 'Kettles' knows where to look for us. If the ice is breaking up, we shall require a boat.
