Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a courting mirror circa early 1800s from New England. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century a young woman’s suitor gave her a vanity mirror that became known as a courting mirror. With the high cost and relative scarcity of good mirror glass, they were the careful work of a skilled cabinetmaker. The glass in the courting mirrors ranged from six to twelve inches in size. The molded frames were finished with oil or varnish and made of maple, cherry, walnut and pine woods. The courting mirror is made of a walnut frame and finely beveled glass. The back of the courting mirror is finished with fine detail and precision to secure the expensive glass mirror. The courting mirror is a perfect size for a table top placement. MEASUREMENTS: 7 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 3/4 inch high.
