Es handelt sich um einen maßiven beschnitzten Block aus einem Stamm der Baumart Merbau – dieses Tropenholz unterliegt nicht den HandelsbeschrÄnkungen des WA (Washingtoner Artenschutzabkommen). Der abgebildete indische Elefant stand seit 1972 in München an ein und derselben Stelle in einer sehr gepflegten Arztpraxis. Die ZÄhne wiegen anhand des Vergleichs mit einer Referenz-Probe jeweils ca. 2,3 kg. Eine Besonderheit weist der linke Zahn auf: eine ca. 1,5cm breite Kannelierung auf, die einst wohl für die Aufnahme eines Zugringes oder Führ-Seil vom indischen Mahout angebracht wurde. Bei afrikanischen Elefanten finden sich derartige Bearbeitungen nie. Es dürfte sich daher aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach um indisches Elfenbein des Asiatischen Elefanten (Elephas maximus) handeln. Der Anteil des in der EU befindlichen indischen Elfenbeins dürfte sich – abgesehen von musealen Objekten – gegen 0% bewegen. Indien hat schon seit dem Altertum seinen Elfenbeinbedarf zu ca. 90% aus afrikanischem Elfenbein gedeckt. Der Holzelefant hat eine LÄnge von ca. 170,0 cm, eine HÖhe von ca. 160,0 cm und eine Breite von ca. 58,0 cm) und dürfte geschÄtzt ca. 600 kg wiegen. Der imposante Holzelefant wurde aus einem einzigen Baumstamm der recht farbintensiven Holzart Merbau gefertigt.
