Item Details
Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a black forest hand carved wooden corn and husk inkwell dated 1867 from Germany. The history of inkwells dates back to and includes the cave dweller, the ancient Chinese and early Egyptians. More recently, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were all written with ink from an inkwell. Many inkwells themes were made in the form of flowers, pets, and geometric shapes. Inkwells were produced and handmade in a selection of materials like shell, pottery, wood, sandstone porcelain, cast bronze, iron and brass. Classic inkwells are just as fascinating as the contents they hold. Some of the most famous inkwells were carved during the 1800s from wood grown in the black forest of Southern Germany. The inkwells are hand carved in the traditional style of the black forest carvers. The carver signed the date “1867” in pencil on the bottom of the black forest corn and husk inkwell. MEASUREMENTS: 6 inches long and 3 inches wide.
