DESCRIPTION: This is a collection of three Taconic handmade baskets from Hudson Valley, New York. The Taconics were from the Palatinate, a district of southwest Germany located west of the Rhine, who came to America just before the Revolutionary War and settled in the area along the east bank of the Hudson River, just south of Albany, New York. They were considered one of the three great basket makers from New England with the Shakers and Native American woodland Indians. The first is a traditional Taconic swing handle with their criss crossed rim, bump up bottom, and carved handle notched into the sides of the basket. The second is a miniature berry-gathering basket with a stationary handle and cross over weave. The last basket is a miniature swing handle basket initialed by the maker Elizabeth Proper. She was the last of the famous Taconic basket makers and initialed or the larger baskets were wood burned or branded with her initials EMP.MEASUREMENTS: The larger swing handle basket is 8 inches wide, 7 inches high, and 24 inches round in circumference. The miniature berry-gathering basket is 6 inches wide, 5 inches high not including the handle, 18 inches in circumference. The miniature swing handle basket is 6 ½ inches wide, 5 inches high, 19 inches in circumference.
