The present fine painting is the work of the Belgian artist Jean Henri De Coene, and it is dated 1834. It depicts an elderly peasant woman in an interior at a spindle next to a fireplace. In front of it are placed all sorts of vegetables. Tired from work, the peasant woman is asleep. Next to her, the table is decorated with the evening meal, while some kitchen utensils are gathered beneath. The painting offers a naturalistic representation of the objects that appear amazingly realistic, especially in the objects on the table. The artist also succeeded in giving the painting a great atmospheric effect.

The painting is signed and dated lower left, ‘Henri Decoene 1834’ and mounted in a gold-toned stucco frame. It is in good overall condition. The canvas has been relined. The canvas shows light craquelure in parts. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially along the edges, as well as some larger retouched areas to the upper part of the painting. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 94 x 79 cm. The stretcher frame measures 73.5 x 59.6 cm.
