Jan Jacob Spohler was a specialist in depicting winter landscapes; works of similar size and quality fetch up to €100,000 at international auctions (see "Winter fun", 1857, Christie's Amsterdam 2007)

This charming winter landscape is a very characteristic motif of the Dutch painter Jan Jacob Spohler, whose oeuvre was primarily devoted to Dutch landscape sceneries in winter. With this artistic approach Spohler caught up with the interests of great artists such as Andreas Schlefhout (1787-1870), who had depicted romantic winter landscapes for the first time. The painting offered here stands out for its fine brushwork and also proves the artist’s masterful ability to capture the atmosphere of landscapes convincingly. The small figures gently contribute to the well-composed depiction, but also introduce us to the life of that time.

The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed lower left ‘J J Spohler’. There are light marks with some scattered losses of paint, where the frame has rubbed; some of these areas are restored. Inspection under UV light reveals further areas of retouching in the sky, especially above the house on the left. There are tine losses of paint visible in the depiction, as well as minimal, almost invisible traces of stains and scratches. The gilded stucco frame only shows small traces of age and use and measures 69 x 90 cm. The size of the panel is 50.5 x 72 cm.
