Dimensions: 110 x 197 cm
Good condition
Impressive panoramic landscape of the artist; Heinrich Vianden had moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 35 and was presumably deeply inspired by the romantic landscapes of his new home

The present large-scale painting was created by the German artist Heinrich ‘Henry’ Vianden and presumably dates back to the late 19th century. It depicts a beautiful panoramic view of a wide coniferous forest with a river in the center and mountain crests in the distance. Given the fact that Vianden had moved to Wisconsin in 1849, the motif could definitely represent an area in the north of America. The painting captivates through the delicate play of light and the romantic composition of the elements.

The painting is signed lower right ‘H. Vianden’. The canvas is relined along the edges and the verso has been supported with a number of small pieces of fabric. The canvas is slightly bumped on the right side and shows a small triangular tear of approximately 3 x 4 cm, lower right. The paint surface is affected by scattered areas of faint abrasions; inspection under UV light reveals a few areas of retouching to the sky and to the lower part of the depiction. The size of the stretcher is 110 x 197 cm.

Heinrich Vianden (1814-1899)

Heinrich Vianden was initially trained as a goldsmith and studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich, between 1838 and 1841. He then spent some time in Antwerp, before settling in Cologne in 1845. Later, in 1849, he decided to move to Wisconsin, where he established as an art teacher and freelance artist in Milwaukee. Vianden deeply influenced the development of art in Wisconsin and is therefore regarded as one of the most important representatives of the local group of painters. (cbo)
