These three drawings by Jeanne Mammen (1890-1976) date from around 1913. They depict figural studies, which were executed in pencil and watercolor on paper, as well as with ink and highlights of white in one of the drawings. The expressive portraits are presented in the artist’s typical dynamic style of depiction. Mammen grew up in Paris and studied painting there, as well as later in Brussels. Works that have emerged during this period – including the present drawings – are often based on literary sources, for example on those of Gustave Flaubert.

Two drawings are monogrammed in pencil with ‘JM’ lower right. Each work bears the estate stamp and details of the drawing on the framing cardboard on the reverse. The sheets are mounted under a mat in a glazed and gilt wooden frame. They are in good condition, showing a light discoloration of the paper and some traces of the working process. The frames are slightly chipped. The sheet dimensions are 17.5 x 12.5 cm, as well as 13 x 10.3 cm and 16.7 x 10 cm. The framed dimensions are 34 x 26 cm.
