The present painting is the work of the Norwegian landscape painter Hans Dahl, and dates from circa 1900. It is titled ‘Frische Briese’ [Fresh Breeze], and shows a sailing boat with four passengers on a fjord. A mountain backdrop and other sailboats are depicted in the background. The fog, the passing gulls and the choppy sea give evidence of an emerging storm. The waves pound against the hull of the small boat that is sailed by a bearded man with a rain cap. Behind him, the hairs of the girl without hat flatter in the wind. Hans Dahl succeeded in capturing a compelling and atmospheric snapshot of Norway’s rough nature. Especially the whipping, close to nature depicted water shows the brilliance of Dahl's painting.



The work is signed and inscribed lower right, 'Hans-Dahl Berlin.’ It is signed and inscribed again on the stretcher on verso, ‘Hans-Dahl Berlin’, and titled ‘Frische Briese (Norwegisches Segelboot)’ [Fresh Breeze – Norwegian Sailboat]. In addition, there are several inscriptions by another hand, remains of an old adhesive label and a stamp of the framer Leopold Hess in Berlin. The painting is in good condition. It shows a few areas of abrasion along the edges due to the framing, as well as scattered, tiny spots in the area of ??the sky. The paint surface is slightly soiled consistent with age. The gold-colored wood frame shows some minor material losses. The overall dimensions, framed, are 98.5 x 128 cm. The stretcher measures 67 x 99 cm.



Hans Dahl (1849-1937)

The Norwegian landscape and genre painter was trained with Hans Fredrik Gude and Wilhelm Riefenstahl at the Academy in Karlsruhe from 1873. He then studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf under Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn. Dahl’s favorite subjects were depictions of the moving water and landscapes with figures. In his late work, he focused on laughing peasant girls in the hay on a sunny fjord. Between 1888 and 1919, Dahl mostly lived in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and spent the summer at his villa in Balestrand on the shores of the Sognefjord. Kaiser Wilhelm II, who regularly went to Norway between 1889 and 1914, appreciated his works and visited him frequently. After 1919, Dahl no longer traveled to Berlin, but permanently remained in Balestrand.
