Adolf Helmberger created this romantic landscape in 1932. An alpine meadow, still partly covered with snow, with two figures extends in the foreground. The clearing is fenced by a dense forest. The majestic mountains of the Salzkammergut throne in the distance before a cloudless blue sky. Helmberger was a skilled landscape painter who was fascinated by the wonders of nature. He found his motifs within his immediate surroundings, especially the landscape around his hometown of St. Gilgen. He skillfully captured the varying, seasonal atmospheres of this scenery in numerous paintings. The result was a wonderful oeuvre of similar motifs, which the painter continued to discover anew.



The painting is in very good condition. The work is unframed. It is signed and dated ‘AHelmberger 1932‘ lower right as well as verso inscribed on the paper in pencil upper left ‘Vorfrühling in den Alpen / Bergwiesen bei St. Gilgen Abersee / mit Blick auf… AHelmberger 1932’. The artist’s board measures 34 x 45 cm.



Adolf Helmberger (1885-1967)

Adolf Helmberger was born in Sankt Gilgen in Austria and studied in Salzburg at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. His teachers were Christian Griepenkerl (1839-1912) and Alois Delug (1859-1930). From 1922 onwards he was a member of the artist’s cooperative in Vienna. At the onset of the First World War, Helmberger volunteered as a war painter – he was excluded from service as an active soldier due to a hearing loss– and was stationed on the Russian and Italian fronts. Besides his numerous landscape paintings, Helmberger also created several war paintings, which are among the best-known works in his oeuvre.
