Canran Zhang is an internationally renowned artist who has been living in Berlin since 2010. He graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, one of the most prestigious institutions in the country

Canran Zhang’s (born 1979) present group portrait from 2007 is determined by a striking contrast

between monochrome and colorful image parts, which is typical for the artist’s oeuvre. The grayish group photo in front of an architectural backdrop, here depicted with four Chinese in traditional costumes and a European statesman, is a recurring motif in Zhang’s work, likewise the colorful background with airplanes in the sky. Zhang finds inspiration from 19th century photographs. Sometimes he depicts real, sometimes imaginary encounters from the history. With the incorporation of modern elements in his compositions, Zhang draws an apt image of China, where tradition and change are faced day by day.

The painting is signed in Chinese and dated ‘2007.8.’ lower right. The condition of the work is very good, showing only minimal traces of use. The dimensions are 79.5 x 99.5 cm.

Canran Zhang (b. 1979)

Canran Zhang began his artistic education with his studies of oil painting at the China Academy of Art. Since 2003, he has been working as a freelance artist in Shanghai. The artist continued studying at the University of Arts in Berlin, where he still lives and works today.
