The present Rosenthal porcelain object is the work of Victor Pasmore (1908-1998) and dates from around 1968, referring to a suggestion made by the initiator of the documenta, Arnold Bode, in 1964, which proposed the creation of a series of porcelain reliefs. Besides Pasmore such famous artists such as Henry Moore, Lucio Fontana, Günther Uecker and Victor Vasarely were involved in the project. The idea was born on the occasion of the documenta 3 under the slogan ‘Image and Sculpture in Space’, emerged with the goal of creating affordable art in high editions. The entrepreneur Philip Rosenthal took up the idea enthusiastically. In 1968, the first results of the project could be seen at the Cologne Kunstverein, including the work of Victor Pasmore. The present object is the copy 26 from an edition of 50 pieces. It is characterized by strong geometric shapes and lines, which show the influence of the constructivist art in the artistic work of Pasmore.
The relief is numbered ‘26/50’ and inscribed ‘VP’ on a label of ‘ars porcellana / rosenthal relief reihe’ on the reverse. It is in good condition with light wear. It is mounted on a white plate with a narrow wooden frame. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 86.5 x 86.5 cm. The relief is 30.5 x 30.5 cm in size. The work is accompanied by the catalog ‘arc porcellana. die Rosenthal relief reihe’ published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Museum Moderner Kunst of Passau in 2009.
