Original glass picture by Otmar Alt from the Gengenbach House Advent Calender. The current highest auction record for a work by Otmar Alt is approximately €18,000

The present electrified glass picture by Otmar Alt (born in 1940) was installed in 1996 as a window at the City Hall of Gengenbach in the Black Forest. It was the 13th window of 24 windows and part of the so-called ‘first big house advent calendar’. It depicts the Niggel tower in Gengenbach and was executed by Uli Libbern. It is mounted in a blue lacquered wooden box with a light switch and electrification on the rear.


The glass picture is signed with ‘O. Alt’ upper left. It is in good overall condition with a long scratch in the representation. The wooden box shows major nicks and scratches. The overall dimensions are 147 x 112 x 19.5 cm. The functionality has not been verified and can therefore not be guaranteed. The light box comes with the gift and memory book ‘Der Gengenbacher Adventskalender’, 1996, signed by the artist, as well as the limited and signed artist's book ‘Innovation’ with the number 473 (including certificate and artist-designed acrylic stand).



Otmar Alt (b. 1940)

Otmar Alt was born in 1940 in Wernigerode in the Harz. At the beginning of the 1950s, he moved to Berlin with his mother. After finishing school, he started his training as a poster painter and a designer of shop windows. In 1959, he began studying at the Berliner Meisterschule für Kunsthandwerk. After receiving his master’s degree under Professor Hermann Bachmann, Otmar Alt worked as an assistant of scenic design in Trier and Frankfurt am Main. During this time, he started organizing exhibitions of his works. To this day, the artist and artisan has created a multifaceted oeuvre containing paintings, graphics and sculptures, designs for children’s books, posters, murals and façades, fountains and stages. Alt received numerous awards for his works. They are regularly exhibited in solo exhibitions, and some of his works can be seen in international museum collections.
