Richard Tuttle is regarded as one of the most exceptional contemporary artists in America. He is well-known for its small-scaled, subtle works which are usually determined by the precise measurements and fine lines, applied to everyday materials such as wood slats, fabrics, wires, cords or cables. His drawings have an uncommonly poetic character that oscillates between the poles of calculated precision, disciplined rigor and playful ease. The present drawings are framed as counterparts and derive from the series ‘Before One and Two’; the numbers 21 and 24 are offered here. There is also a reference to the works on paper by Joseph Beuys and John Cage, who equally approached the medium with innovative and absolute groundbreaking concepts.

Both works are in very good condition with only minimal traces of wear. They are both numbered with pencil on the verso, reading ‘21’ or ‘24’. Besides, the works are verso inscribed with an arrow, indicating the intended hanging. Both sheets reveal the water mark ‘Arches’ in one corner and light superficial crease marks here and there. The works are mounted on thin gray cardboard which is laid down on strong white cardboard. The wooden frames are also in very good condition and measure 68.5 x 58 cm, respectively. The size of each sheet is 61 x 50.7 cm.

Richard Tuttle (b. 1941)

Grown up in New Jersey, Richard Tuttle initially studied at the Pratt Institute of Design in Brooklyn and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1964, after further artistic training at the Trinity College Hartford in Connecticut. After a short semester at the Cooper Union in New York, Richard Tuttle had his first solo exhibition at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1965. His early works are deeply influenced by the works of Agnes Martin and Ellsworth Kelly, which eventually animated him to his personal poetic, post-minimalist style. Richard Tuttle already gained recognition in Europe in 1969, when exhibiting at Harald Szeemann’s legendary exhibition ‘When Attitudes Become Form’. This was followed by his much admired participations at the documenta exhibitions 5, 6 and 7 in Kassel. Today, the artist lives and works in New York, in Mount Desert, Maine and in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
