Description
140. Shaman Snake Cane-Ca. 1800-Substantial, single piece hardwood shaft carved with an encircling snake. The reptile has a triangular, viper-like head with a stretched forked tongue and a scaled body in an unusual high relief up to one inch in certain places and greenish-brown paint highlights. The scalloped edge and the angular tip of the 5 3/4” tall and mighty iron ferrule help dating the cane around 1800, the intense surface corrosion suggests that as well. Fabulous folk art walking stick with a quirky originality and ennobled by an intense age patina. Possibly for ceremonial use.-H. 6” x 1 ¾”, O.L. 37 ¾”
