This unique table, with sculptural enameled steel base, was specifically created specifically for Selma Friedman’s family home in New York City. With a group of other custom made furniture, most famously a pair of ‘Unicorn’ sofas which sold at auction in 2007 for over $186,000 for the pair.
Celebrated for his modernist sensibility, Vladimir Kagan is considered one of the most important furniture designers of the 20th century.
Born in Germany, the son of a Russian cabinetmaker, Kagan immigrated to the United States with his family, in 1938. Studying architecture at Columbia University, Kagan joined the family business, opening his first shop in New York in 1949.
Vladimir Kagan’s designs are represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, The Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
