Description
22 documents from the estate of minister Bechor-Shalom Sheetrit, 1940s through 1960s.
Bechor-Shalom Sheetrit (1895-1967) was the first Minister of Police in the young State of Israel. Apart from his public and legal involvement during the Yishuv period, he was a member of Minhelet HaAm and one of the Independence Scroll signatories (the only one who was born in Eretz Israel). Served as a Knesset Member six times and quitted this position only one month prior to his death. Was the first Minister of Police from the days of the provisional government (May 1948) until his retirement and served as Minister of Minority Affairs during the existence of this office. Served as a member of the Judges Appointment committee from the day it was founded until his very last day. Throughout his service as a Knesset Member, he served several times as Minister of Postal Services. Shitrit was the Minister who held the same office for the longest time (18 years and a half).
The collection includes: a typewritten letter, signed by David Ben-Gurion, addressed to "all of the government members", concerning a leak to "Yediot Ahronot" newspaper of the contents of a meeting between the American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles concerning the evacuation of Gaza and Sharm-el Shiekh (January 1, 1957). • A typewritten letter from Moshe Dayan, signed. • A short report regarding the establishment of an "institute for integration of exiles in Israel". Attached to this report is a short letter from Golda Meir (Foreign Minister), signed by her.• A letter from Pinchas Rosen, concerning "the Committee of Seven" that investigated the "Lavon Affair" and additional letters regarding this affair. • Photo of the Government Members in the house of President Yitzchak Ben-Zvi, 1965. • A handwritten draft of a letter, to David Ben-Gurion (March 1949): "I left today bitterly disappointed; I saw myself as a student being tested…and not as an equal government member…". • A typewritten speech aimed at collecting funds for the state of Israel. • Copy of a letter to Haim Shorer, editor of “Davar†newspaper, concerning the prisoners’ uprising in “Shata†prison (“Shata Rebellionâ€, August 1958). Signed by Shitrit. Attached is a long letter from Shorer regarding the paper’s policy. • Handwritten texts, concerning the founding of “HaMa’arach†faction, 1964. • Calling card of Pola Ben-Gurion; on the reverse- a handwritten invitation to Pola and David Ben-Gurion’s grandson Yariv Ben-Eliezer’s Bar Mitzvah; additional letter from Pola Ben-Gurion. • A printer poster, “guidelines of the government planâ€, November 1955.
