19TH C RED JAPANNED CHINOISERIE DECORATED BOOKCASE SECRETARY: Bicentennial William and Mary Bookcase Secretary Ca late 1800's. Glazed sixteen light bookcase top with gold lattice decor over a slant lid secretary below having a valenced interior, and a red leather inset to drop lid, two dovetailed drawers with shaped fronts and chamfered bottoms. The Chinoiserie decorated cabinet with a classic William and Mary cross stretcher base. 74 1/2"h x 30"w x 20"d. Provenance: "The Secretary was purchased in 1931 from the Findlay Galleries of Chicago (Now Wally Flndlay/Parke-Bernet) by my father Dr. A.M. Harvey. The Secretary along with many other art objects came from the home of Samuel Insull, a multi-millionaire Utility Executive who became bankrupt after the 1929 Stock Market crash. The Secretary is believed to have been in Mrs. Insull's Bedroom suite." John E. Harvey

Normal wear for age, repair to left corner of drop lid, missing sections of lacquer/veneer mostly to lower left corner. Keys in office.
