John Broadwood & Sons concert grand piano, the ornate art case in a Louis XIV style with extensive gilding and Vernis Martin style painted decoration. The following information was provided by John Broadwood & Sons from their historical records: "Your piano was constructed at our Horseferry Road workshop, Westminster, London. Our records initially describe the instrument as a model number 17 grand pianoforte in an oak case. Before its construction was complete, however, on the 19th November 1889, the instrument was transported to the well known firm of Howards of Berners Street, Oxford Street, London, in order to have its oak casework darkened by "fuming". The piano was then returned to us on the 22nd November, for completion of the internal work - the stringing, installation of the action and keyboard etc. The piano was completed as a musical instrument on the 28th November 1889. For some unknown reason, there was a delay of about ten months before anything next happened. But then on Monday the 1st September 1890, the piano in question was despatched by us to a firm called Stewart and Brown of Eagle Street, Holborn, London, "for decoration". This decorative work had been commission by the individual who ultimately purchased the piano from us: Mr. Thomas O'Hagan, who lived at an expensive and fashionable address at 11, Lancaster Gate, West London. After decorative work was complete, the piano was returned to our workshops for checking over and tuning on the 2nd October 1890. Finally, on the 15th October 1890, our porters Mr. Gardner and Mr. Lunn carefully delivered the piano by horse and wagon to Mr. O'Hagan's home at Lancaster Gate. In our porters' book for the period, the piano is described as follows: an iron concert grand pianoforte, case decorated in the later Louis XIV style as per drawings, ironwork etc. gilded." 38.75" H x 101" L x 60.25" W, Circa - 1890.
