Rare Grosjean & Woodward for Tiffany sterling tea and coffee service including a teapot, coffee pot, kettle on a stand, sugar bowl, cream jug and waste bowl all chased in an elaborate floral repousse pattern. Marked for G&W and Tiffany & Co., English Sterling, 550 Broadway, 5122; 184.9 ozt. (total), 15.5" H (tallest), dated 1852, The set was produced by Charles Grosjean and John Woodward, noted New York Silversmiths who collaborated with Tiffany & Co. in the earliest years that Charles L.Tiffany retailed fine silver items at the newly opened Broadway Street location. Grosjean and Woodward worked also independently as well as for other New York retailers, and this service is one of the few created for Tiffany during their brief collaboration. Tiffany & Co., under the leadership of silversmith Edward C. Moore began producing silver in-house after their successes at the 1867 Paris Exposition, and in 1880, Grosjean's son Charles T. Grosjean, also a silversmith employed at Tiffany & Co. created amongst other masterpieces, one of the most enduring designs in American silver manufacturing, the Chrysanthemum pattern.
