Description: xviii, 347 pp. Illustrated with colored lithograph frontispiece, wood engraved title page vignette and several engravings in the text. Publisher's 24-pp. catalogue and ad for Colburn's United Service Magazine bound in at rear. 8¾x5¾, original beige cloth stamped in gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition.
Text is compiled from a newspaper - the "Aurora Borealis" - published aboard one of the four ships of the expedition in 1850 which set out in search of Sir John Franklin. The small squadron was trapped in the ice for nearly 12 months, during which time commanders, officers, and crew contributed musings on a variety of subjects, some humorous, some scientific. The "magazine" was produced on the 15th of each month in manuscript copies. Arctic Bib. 651.
