The recipient is quite likely Ben Stanley Revett, the "Gold Dredge King," who made a fortune in the Colorado gold fields with the introduction of his device in 1905. The book iteself is a first-hand account of one of the century's worst exploration disasters, the 1913 Karluk expedition to chart the waters north of Alaska. Arctic Bib. 1112.
