Description
Northern plains tobacco bag, probably Sioux circa 1890s, constructed in typical fashion with three panels. The upper panel is minimally decorated natural leather with a beaded strip up each side and a beaded top edge, a zigzag line at the bottom in light and dark blue, the central panel is fully beaded with a pink background and geometric designs in white, dark blue, yellow, light blue, red and green; the bottom panel consists of rawhide strips wrapped with dyed porcupine quills having a red background with yellow and purple geometric designs woven into the panel and terminating in leather trim. A beautifully designed and artistically executed bag with unusual lavender beaded panel and a slatted quill panel that needs only minor restoration. Measures 31 x 7 inches overall.
Condition
Good, noting typical soiling and wear along with loss to the quill decoration.
