Description
Portrait of a Woman in a White Dress, Attributed to Gilbert Stuart
Attributed to Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755-1828). A late 18th century oil on wove canvas, portrait of a woman, purportedly George Washington's ward, wearing a white dress. Unsigned; 23.75 x 27.25 in. (sight).
This work is not listed in Park's Illustrative Descriptive List of his Work, but is purported by the consignor's family to be of "George Washington's ward." The likely sitter would be Elizabeth Parke Custis Law, Washington's step-granddaughter, whom the Washingtons raised after the death of her father. The canvas is late 18th century, and the rendering of the sitter is consistent with Stuart's manner.
