American, early 19th century. Oil on board, housed in black painted frame with nameplate reading Lucy Nason Adams/ 1814. A half-length seated portrait of a young woman in a white dress with red shawl. Unsigned. Later writing on verso in graphite Lucy Nason/Belle of Belfast; 25.5 x 20.75 in. (sight).
The sitter is purportedly Lucy Nason Adams, wife of Lynda Adams of Vermont, painted around the time of her wedding. Lynda was a descendant of Henry Adams (1580-1646) and distant relative of the Adams' presidents.
