African American Quilts

American (Alabama, 20th century). Two pieced quilts by African American quilters from the American South, an asymmetrical geometric quilt by Mozell Benson in printed and solid silk pieces and a cotton quilt by Lureca Outland featuring a primary cotton leaf pattern in printed fabrics on yellow blocks and a pink ground. Lot includes the exhibition catalog For John Cox' Daughter: African American Quilts from the Southeastern United States; 79 x 81 in (larger).

Both quilters were featured in the exhibition, For John Cox' Daughter, held at the University of Michigan in 1991. The quilts in this lot were purchased at the exhibition.
