Description
Outstanding Winter Landscape by George Ames AldrichΒ
George Ames Aldrich (American, 1872-1941). Oil on canvas. Probably a landscape inΒ Southern France. Signed l.r.;Β several exhibition labels on verso; 30 x 35.75 in. (sight).
A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, George Ames Aldrich studied in New York and France before making his way west to Chicago and, eventually, South Bend, Indiana in the 1920s. While Aldrich seems not to have spent as much time, nor produced as many paintings,Β in France as he originally claimed, his time studyingΒ the rural landscapes of Normandy and BrittanyΒ would informΒ hisΒ paintingΒ for decades. Picturesque scenes such as this one, with a focus on water and rural buildings,Β were particularly popular with the Midwestern collectors who embraced his work.
