Description
Graterford Prison Marquetry Child's Chest and Mirror

American, 20th century. A child's chest of drawers of mixed woods, with tilting beveled mirror flanked by two handkerchief drawers, the base having three drawers, all with elaborate marquetry work; ht. 33, wd. 22, dp. 11.25 in.

Dr. Lester Hergesheimer, a surgeon in Philadelphia, made weekly visits to the Graterford Prison in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to treat prisoners. He commissioned this piece as a gift for his four year old daughter in 1937. The Graterford Prison, known today as SCI Graterford, is still in operation as a maximum security penitentiary.

Condition
The piece retains its original beveled mirror and the velvet lining of the drawers. A few small losses to the marquetry work on each side, and losses to several of the drawer fronts.
