Nantucket Lightship Basket, Plus

American, ca. 1870s. An oval Nantucket lightship basket, reportedly made by Captain Thomas S. James (1811-1885), South Shoal Lightship, with a carved hardwood swing handle, H / H W L inscribed on bottom; ht. 6.5, wd. 14, dp. 9.75 in., PLUS a small round Nantucket lightship basket with a swing handle, signed on bottom John Bayer 1981; ht. 4.25, dia. 4.25 in.

The consignor purchased the larger basket from Smudge Antiques in Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1982. The proprietor of Smudge had been told by Paul Madden, a Nantucket basket expert and proprietor of Paul Madden Antiques, that the basket was definitely made by Captain James. The Smudge proprietor also stated that the basket had been owned by the actress Helen Vinson. Correspondence from the Smudge proprietor to the consignor is included with the lot.
