Tramp Art Church-Form Jewelry Box and Tower
American, late 19th-early 20th century. An outstanding tramp art jewelry box in the form of a church and a tower, the church having a hinged lid disguised as a roof with a coin or paper slot, a central steeple, and two dormers, the windows covered with hinged shutters and fitted with green and amber glass panes, the interior opening to reveal a rectangular mirror surrounded by layered chip carvings embellished with gold and silver polychrome paint, all above a compartmentalized jewelry box lined with blue and green velvet, the front of the church having hinged doors with gold knobs and opening to reveal a conforming mirror. Bordered on the right by a tower composed of five removable sections, each decorated with layered chip carvings and gold-painted rosettes, the bottom four sections having a combination of windows and doors with hinged shutters and red, green, blue, amber, or mirrored glass panes. The church and tower can be completely removed from the base by turning the chip-carved fasteners located near the corners; ht. 24.75, wd. 29.75, dp. 13.75 in.
