Elizabeth Nourse (American, 1859-1938). A watercolor depicting a downtown Cincinnati canal with a view toward Mt. Adams, signed and dated E. Nourse / 1884 and inscribed To my dear Friend Ottilie Roederstein; 10.5 x 16 in. (sight).
Ottile Roederstein (1859-1937) was a Swiss-German painter and a contemporary and friend of Nourse. Roederstein excelled at portraiture and drew praise for her ability to evocatively and sympathetically express the character of her sitters. She studied painting in Germany at a number of studios and exhibited her work in Germany and France. Her paintings were included at the Exposition Universelle (1889) in Paris.
