Description
Original carved marble torso (possibly Venus), in the manner of Aristide Maillol (1861-1944). Signed with a stylized "M" within a circle. Circa early 20th century. H. 38 inches. W. 18 inches. D. 10 1/2 inches. Very good condition.
The present lot closely relates to a bronze torso of Venus by Maillol. One of Maillol's primary artistic interests was the nude female figure, a recurring theme in much of his work. Although he was inspired by ancient Greek sculpture, he preferred the full, voluptuous female body rather than the more slender Classical form. This is further emphasized by the absence of head and limbs.
