The handpainted French faience known as Quimper Pottery, pronounced “kem-pair” has been manufactured in Quimper a town in Brittany, France for over 300 years. The pottery adopted its name from the town of Quimper where potter Jean-Baptist Bousquet built his kilns in the Quimper area of Locmaria in 1699 and was given a royal manufacturing license by King Louis XIV. Although the area of Locmaria in Quimper has been associated with pottery as far back as the Gallo-Roman era, Bousquet is credited with being the founder of "Quimper Pottery". In 1776, a rival factory was founded followed by a third pottery factory in 1778. During these early times, the artists painted with their fingers creating very simple floral patterns. It was not until the late 1800's that the beloved Breton country life featuring the French Peasants in their traditional garbs became associated with "Quimper Pottery". By the early 1900's two major factories operating in Quimper merged to form The Henriot factory. The original Bousquet factory was sold and retained the name Grande Maison HB. In 1968, Henriot and HB merged.
