Description
American, Late 19th/Early 20th century (circa 1900). Important American Federal Revival mahogany tall chest with a projecting molded drawer over a bank of four graduated drawers flanked by disengaged reeded columns raised on front lion's paw feet. Height 52.25 inches, width 3 inches, depth 27 inches. Provenance: According to paperwork documented by Clary & Co Antiques, New York, NY, this tall chest came from Hammersmith Farm, the Auchincloss family estate located in Newport Rhode Island. Hammersmith Farm,overlooking Naragansett Bay, formed a backdrop for Miss Bouvier's family and summer holidays, as well as Mrs. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's wedding day. It also served as the summer White House during the Kennedy Administration. According to this document, this tall chest was used in President and Mrs. Kennedy's bedroom at Hammersmith Farm.
