Description
Clifton Webb Personal Letter - Clifton Webb was one of those amazing character actors who you know instantly by face and voice, and even walk. Brilliant at classy villains, like his portrayal of Waldo Lydecker in “Laura” (1944), he is perhaps best known for his priggish character of Mr. Belvedere in a series of extremely popular "Belvedere" films in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. His abrasive, fussy, condescending character was not far from the real Clifton. In fact Jay Ward said that his character of Mr. Peabody in the “Rocky and Bullwinkle” show was inspired by him. Webb lived with his mother, Maybelle, his entire adult life, until she died at the age of 91. He passed away not long after. This is a rare and fascinating handwritten note by Clifton Webb to his close friend’s actor Van Johnson and his wife Evie, who he adored. It is written from Webb’s home in Beverly Hills to the Johnson’s, who were in Switzerland at the time visiting their friend Charlie Chaplin. Webb talks a great deal about his time in New York and beyond, and as was his trademark, complains copiously about his “illnesses” (he was a famous hypochondriac). Of course he ends his note mentioning his beloved mother Maybelle, who, as he writes: “joins me in sending you both our fondest love”. The letter and envelope are both on Webb’s personal stationary. The envelope is hand-addressed by Webb to the Johnson’s in Switzerland, and is postmarked from Beverly Hills on December 15, 1959, and includes two four-cent stamps and a seven cent Air Mail stamp. This beautiful piece of Hollywood memorabilia comes from Van Johnson’s personal collection and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
