Description
Elizabeth Taylor Personalized Autographed MGM Photo - Van Johnson had many close friends in the "business". One of his and his wife Evie's closest was Elizabeth Taylor. They were with her during her first unsuccessful marriage to Conrad Hilton, Jr., and kept her company as she began to see British Actor Michael Wilding, who she evidentially left Conrad for and married as her second husband. And they continue to be at her side through her tumultuous life after that as well. Taylor literally became part of their family and befriended many of Van and Evie's relatives as her own. Perhaps her favorite was Sheridan Abbott Kimmel, known affectionally as "Uncle Sherry", who was Evie's brother. Taylor always had a soft spot for people with emotional fragility, perhaps knowing how close she was to the same fate. Sherry had lied about his age and enlisted in the Marines at the age of 15 during WWII, and became a tail-gunner on a bomber. Soon after he was involved in a tragic air battle, in which he witnessed the gruesome death of virtually every crewmember aboard. He too was seriously wounded, and was left with a metal plate in his head. Taylor became very close to Sherry after that when she was making "The Last Time I Saw Paris" (1954) with Van Johnson. Sherry was a total outcast, an early "hippy", who was additional damaged when he was experimented on by the US Government after the war by given "cocktails" of dangerous drugs including LSD. Taylor was at his side during these times, and became extra kind and attentive to him. He adored her back and credited her with keeping him alive. This is a rare autograph of Elizabeth Taylor made out "To Sherry - Best Wishes - Elizabeth Taylor". It is on an original official MGM publicity photo taken at the time she was making "A Place In The Sun" which had special importance to Sherry, who related to the equally mentally troubled co-star, Montgomery Cliff. He treasured this photo for the rest of his life. The autographed photo comes from Van Johnson’s personal collection, and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world. The photo is B&W with the official MGM stamp on the back and is 8"x10".
