Van Johnson Personal Photo Scrapbook - The magical “Heyday of Hollywood” stretched from the early 1920’s until the late 1950’s (when the powerful studio system disintegrated). It was a time of pure glamour the likes of which the world has never seen before , or sadly, will never see again. What are left now, since virtually all of the “kings and queens, legends and wizards” of that era are gone, are basically just memories and, if one is lucky, memorabilia. It is rare that someone can truly dive head first into that magnificent era and get a true and pure feeling of what it was really like to be alive among the giants, without the sanitation of Public Relations Agencies, Studio Interference or careful censorship. This is one of those rare exceptions. Super star and matinee idol Van Johnson and his beloved popular wife Evie’s personal photographs, over 60 of them, from many of their famous Hollywood parties, either at their home in Beverly Hills, or during their global adventures during the 1940’s and 1950’s. These never before published or seen private one-of-a-kind photos are the actual photographs from one of their own personal scrap books. The photos are displayed in the original scrapbook cardboard pages, overlapped by the original transparent protective sheeting. They include Van and Evie with some of the truly greats, all in candid moments, including Judy Garland (giving everyone a private concert in their home as she “sings for her supper”, and during one of her “lively arguments” with other top stars and entertainers); Adnan Kashoggi, one of the richest men in the world; legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein; “The Day The Earth Stood Still’s” Michael Rennie; Elizabeth Taylor; Audrey Hepburn; Steve McQueen; Ray Malland; Dick Powell; Diana Shore; Sophia Loren; Ingrid Bergman; controversial Prince Ali Salman (son of Aga Khan III, the head of the Niz?r? Ism?'?l? Muslims, and third husband of actress Rita Hayworth) shown at his villa in France, L'Horizon; Farley Granger; Ricardo Montalban; Ann Southern; Richard Egan; Esther Williams (both at the Johnson's home and greeting fans at a premiere with Van); Janet Leigh in Hawaii; Eddie Cantor; Jack Benny performing in Las Vegas; Jim Backus; Jill St. John; Yul Brynner; Rhonda Fleming; Norma Shearer; George Jessell; and Van’s step son (son of actor Keenan Wynn) Tracy Keenan Wynn with his Emmys for “Tribes” and the “Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman”. Also included are personal photos of Van and Evie on their world travels, and original studio press news clips. Tyrone Power, who had a life-long love for Evie, also sent his version of “screen shots” to Evie from some of his favorite movie roles that he personally took photos of off this “new fangled” thing called a television and sent to her! Also included is a personally signed letter from Hollywood biographer Gerald Clarke who asks Evie questions about many of the stars, including Judy Garland (for his definitive book on her, " GET HAPPY: THE LIFE OF JUDY GARLAND"), especially on how she met Tyrone Power at Evie’s house and they ended up having a long affair (during the party we see in the photos). Also included are two extremely rare original menus of the legendary Lüchow's Restaurant in New York (resplendent with special handwritten notes by Van Johnson), and another original menu from the equally legendary Winston Theater Grill “Host of the Stars”. This is the much sought after Harold V. Shaw designed menu which includes the printing of over 30 autographs of great stars and entertainers of the day from the “Lucky Table”.
