Watercolor and black pencil [or charcoal] on Arches-watermarked paper, untitled (diptych), by/attributed to Joan Mitchell (1926-1992). One panel signed, lower right. Approximate dimensions: 9 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Some slight foxing to areas on reverse and very slight scuffing to back of paper when the watercolor was removed from its frame; some of the colors may be slightly faded in areas, otherwise very good condition.

Lot Note: Although it is not dated, this watercolor relates very closely - both in style and color - to Mitchell's watercolors dating from the mid to late 1960's (see for example, "Joan Mitchell: Works on Paper 1956-1992," by John Yau, illustration no. 21). The Arches watermark also appears to be consistent with this date.

Provenance: Bernard Raynaud, Paris; Henry White, San Francisco; presumably acquired from the latter by the consignor's family before 1975.
