Description
Five Panels of Framed Chinese Hand-Painted Wallpaper, probably 19th century, decorated with Mandarin figures in gardens at plazas and a series of pagodas, in contemporary frames, each panel, h. 59", w. 23".
Condition
Panels form a continuous scene with lots of great detail. All exhibit some degree of scattered old water damage, shallow buckles, splits, scattered inpainting and areas of darkening--all consistent with age. The far left panel with a loss near the lower edge (approximately 1-1/2" x 2") along with very scattered TINY losses here and there. Laid down on paper board and varnished over at some point. Framed by the previous owner, late 20th century, in contemporary frames and secured at the back with an additional painted wood frame and cardboard. No glass. Provenance: The Estate of Frances Wilson Devany Shackelford, Little Rock and Montrose, Arkansas by descent through her maternal line.
